Spinning Instructor
Indoor cycling, sometimes referred to as ‘spinning’, is usually performed in a studio, although in many health clubs it is now common to deliver these classes on the gym floor in order to encourage a wider participation.
Indoor Cycling instructors can decide to deliver their own indoor cycling programmes, in much the same way that a gym instructor or exercise to music instructor would design their own programmes, or alternatively, they could opt to deliver one of the pre-choreographed or branded forms of indoor cycling, including:
- -Spinning
- -Les Mills RPM
- -Reebok Tomahawk Ice
Spinning Instructor Opportunities
Spinning instructors are able to undertake a varied work day because of the diversity of the programme that they teach. Most instructors will deliver spinning sessions in addition to their full-time mode of employment, or other classes that they deliver. Employment opportunities for spinning instructors include:
- -Health club chains like David Lloyd, Esporta, DW Sports Fitness
- -Schools and colleges
- -Local authority leisure centres- some of these may be privately operated
- -Cruise ships
- -Holiday resorts and hotels
- -Spas
- -Village halls / community centres- for self or on behalf on an employer
The rate of pay for a spinning instructor will be similar to that of an exercise to music instructor; as such this will vary from one employer to the next, and the mode of employment. Sessions are usually a little shorter than exercise to music classes at around 45 minutes, so pay may be affected slightly by this.
Freelancers typically earn between £15.00-£25.00 per hour or session depending on their employer, although those who work for themselves, have a potentially uncapped income.
If for example a spinning instructor ran their own sessions, and has 15 people attended, their earnings for the session could be:
15 x £3.50 = £52.50*
*Clearly the rental fee for the venue would need to be subtracted from this sum, in addition to the cost of purchasing any equipment required would also need to be considered. Since most spinning bikes cost in excess of £400.00, purchasing equipment for instructors to host their own classes might not be a viable option for most.
Qualifications
The most widely recognised indoor cycling / spinning qualification is the Level 2 Award in Group Indoor Cycling (Active IQ or CYQ).
